Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
My Cup Overflows
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff— they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
[Reading above - Psalm 23]
This song is one of the most well-known passages in the Bible. It has brought comfort, strength, and assurance of God’s caring presence to countless generations of the faithful. The psalm blends two images to describe the Divine presence: a protective shepherd and a gracious host. In our journey through this life, we need One who can provide guidance, nourishment, rest, restoration, protection, and comfort. In grateful response we enter the house of the Lord where Divine grace brings us to a common table even with our enemies, welcoming all with hospitality and generosity. It is little wonder that those who stay close to the Shepherd live in the qualities of Shalom—goodness and mercy
Questions for Reflection:
What are the green pastures and still waters that nourish and restore you? How do you make rest and renewal part of your daily life?
What difference does it make to remember that in the darkest valley God is with you? How do you experience God’s protection?
Anointing with oil was an ancient expression of hospitality and rejoicing. How do you express hospitality and rejoicing in your life and relationships?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
Create a sanctuary in your home. Set aside a place that is a retreat from the demands of your schedule, a place to breathe, rest, and feel peaceful. Share that place with someone you know who needs it. Let goodness and mercy overflow in your life.
A Practice to Deepening Discipleship
Incorporate a faith journal in your spiritual practice. Use the journal as a way to:
jot down needs and blessings with words or drawings or pictures
respond to the questions for reflection in the sermon notes
make notes about the weekly scripture lessons and sermons
create a to-do list of discipleship actions
list questions you want to explore
write prayers, stories, poems, or letters
be creative!
