Key Notes from the reading & sermon:

“See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

“Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me. Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous; and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple—truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward.”

Matthew chapter 10 records Jesus’ instructions for the mission of disciples into the world God loves. Like the disciples Jesus first called, and the disciples first reading Matthew’s gospel, we too face adversity as ambassadors for the grace and peace of Christ. Since the principalities and powers of the world are so often out of synch with the Leader who calls us to love our enemies and turn the other cheek, our mission can feel like being sheep among wolves. Despite the adversity we are not afraid; Christ’s Spirit is with us providing Divine wisdom and the innocence springing from lives of integrity. We will serve no matter what in a ministry of hospitality.

Questions for Reflection:

How do the threat of corona virus and the brutality of racism create fear in our call to serve and provide opportunities to serve in new ways?

In your discipleship how do you feel as wise as a serpent and as innocent as a dove?

Jesus uses the image of hospitality to describe our ministry in the world. How can we practice hospitality as an ambassador of Christ in our homes and in our church to fulfill our mission?

Do you have the eyes of faith to see the way others represent Christ to you? Do you have the heart of faith to see the way you represent Christ to others?
