Key Notes from the reading & sermon:

“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

In Matthew chapter ten Jesus teaches his disciples to face hardship and persecution with a mission of welcome and hospitality. We do not meet evil with evil. We practice justice, kindness and humility in the simple and effective ways of welcome and hospitality, like: listening carefully, offering a cup of cool water to the thirsty, a warm meal for the hungry, and a safe place of rest and compassion for the weary and hurting. In Matthew chapter eleven Jesus demonstrates his teaching in the adversity he faces and by extending hospitality to those he serves. Note that Jesus does not remove the burdens of our lives but shares the load, creating space for rest and renewal.

Questions for Reflection:

Our culture values handling our own problems and keeping our stress and worry to ourselves. The goal of our culture is independence. Are you comfortable asking for help? Have you admitted your need for help with anyone in the past week? How did that go? Do you view the need for help as a sign of weakness? What kind of example are you setting for those who look up to you?

Jesus takes a more honest and realistic approach reflecting God’s intentions for community. Jesus encourages reliance upon the strength and wisdom he has to offer. Jesus values the interdependence of partnership and teamwork. Jesus values the gifts each one has to offer, not just those who our culture names as strong, healthy and capable. Can you see the way our vulnerabilities are the place of authentic connection? Are you able to let others share their gifts? Do you find rest and renewal in your teamwork with Jesus and with other disciples? What does that look like in your life?
