Key Notes from the reading & sermon:

Journeying with John, Come and Have Breakfast

When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.” Now none of the disciples dared to ask him, “Who are you?” because they knew it was the Lord. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. This was now the third time that Jesus appeared to the disciples after he was raised from the dead.

[Reading above - John 21: 9-14]

This story of the Risen One is easily overlooked because it is so understated. Jesus speaks two simple and rather mundane invitations. The disciples say nothing even though there are questions on their minds. This is a story about the significance of fellowship with Christ. Brian Erickson, in a commentary on this passage, puts it this way: “Jesus shows up, just as he appeared to the disciples to make sure they did not miss the most important meal of the day. It is maternal and kind and unnecessary in the way only grace can manage.”

Questions for Reflection:

  • Describe a moment when you felt the presence of Christ? How did the experience nourish your spirit?

  • Sometimes what our loved ones need is not the answers to their questions and problems but a kind and caring presence. How have you received this gift and how have you shared this gift?

  • In our noisy world with unending and often mean-spirited comments, how can quiet and listening advance the grace and peace of Christ?
