Key Notes from the reading & sermon:

“What do you think? A man had two sons; he went to the first and said, ‘Son, go and work in the vineyard today.’ He answered, ‘I will not’; but later he changed his mind and went. The father went to the second and said the same; and he answered, ‘I go, sir’; but he did not go. Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes are going into the kingdom of God ahead of you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him; and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him.

At this point in the story Jesus is in Jerusalem, only a few days from his arrest and execution. The pressure is mounting as Jesus’ authority to teach in the Temple is questioned. This parable is offered as part of Jesus’ response. Jesus reframes the debate from the issue of authority and power to an issue of obedience and humility. Jesus is arguing for righteous action. Jesus is placing a premium on humble repentance that leads to a change of heart.

Questions for Reflection:

Who is the authority in your life? What do your actions demonstrate about the authority you choose?

Christ is sending us into the vineyard to work. If the vineyard is your home, what would humble obedience to Christ look like in your family? If the vineyard is your neighborhood, what would humble obedience to Christ look like with your neighbors?

What does it mean in our place and time to welcome the “tax collectors and prostitutes” into Friedens Church as a community founded on the grace of God?
