Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Scripture Lesson
Sunday, March 2, 2025 Transfiguration Sunday
Scripture Reading: Psalm 88:1-5, 9
Sermon: Holy is the Lord
Psalm 99:1-5, 9
The Lord is king; let the peoples tremble! He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake! The Lord is great in Zion; he is exalted over all the peoples. Let them praise your great and awesome name. Holy is he! Mighty King, lover of justice, you have established equity; you have executed justice and righteousness in Jacob. Extol the Lord our God; worship at his footstool. Holy is he! Extol the Lord our God, and worship at his holy mountain; for the Lord our God is holy.
Key Idea of the Sermon
The Sunday before the liturgical season of Lent is called Transfiguration Sunday. Before Jesus begins the path toward Jerusalem and the cross, Jesus is transfigured into a heavenly form that foreshadows his resurrection and ascension. Today we are studying Psalm 99, the Hebrew scripture lection chosen for this Sunday. This song celebrates God as holy and as monarch over all, these characteristics of the Divine are reflected in Christ Jesus. Today we are invited to reflect on the way Jesus is worthy to be our Leader, and what that means in our daily lives.
Questions for Reflection
• The opening three verses of this Psalm affirm God as a monarch over all. For God’s people, who were often the pawns of much larger empires around them, affirming God as monarch over all was a hopeful way to proclaim a promised future of protection and security under God’s reign. How does your faith in God’s greatness give you hope in the adversity you face?
• The holiness or “otherness” of God suggests both the awe-inspiring greatness of the Divine as well as God’s moral majesty. What is the appropriate human response to our Holy God?
• Verse 4 praises God for ruling with justice and equity. Unlike human rulers, God can be counted on to work for comprehensive wellbeing through actions that puts things right and provides an abundance that meets all needs. How do you advance the just and equitable reign of God?
A Spiritual Practice to Try
When we are feeling the winter blues it is especially important to practice the rituals and traditions of our faith. Daily prayer and Bible reading keep us close to Christ. Regular worship keeps us in communion with the community of disciples. Serving others opens us to a greater sense of meaning, purpose, and joy. Make faith practice a priority this winter and see how your mood changes.
