Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Now What?
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
[Reading Above - Matthew 28: 16-20]
A “now what” moment is a time of uncertainty; a decision point and turning point. It is a moment when we could use some advice. But not just any old advice, advice from someone we trust the most and from someone who loves us the most. I believe this is an important takeaway from the way Mathew concludes his story of Jesus.
Questions for Reflection:
In our story for today the disciples are reeling from the resurrection of Jesus and wondering “now what?” What transition are you moving through currently? Who are you turning to for advice?
Doubt does not disqualify anyone from discipleship. What are some of the doubts you struggle to make sense of?
Who in your circle of influence would benefit from following the way of Jesus? Who is open to having a discussion about faith? Now what?
A Spiritual Practice to Try:
One of the best ways to encourage someone to follow Jesus is to share the difference following Jesus has made in your life. Think about and put together your story of why discipleship maters. Then share it! Follow up by listening carefully to the questions or doubts of one who is interested in discipleship and invite them to Friedens where they can meet other disciples and learn more. If you would like to share your story with me please send it to pastormarc.friedensucc@outlook.com.
A Practice to Focus on Discipleship:
Incorporate a faith journal in your spiritual practice. Use the journal as a way to:
jot down needs and blessings with words or drawings or pictures, respond to the questions for reflection in the sermon notes, make notes about the weekly scripture lessons and sermons, create a to-do list of discipleship actions, list questions you want to explore, write prayers, stories, poems, or letters, be creative!
