Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
Journeying with John; I Will Not Leave You Orphaned
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17 This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.
18 “I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. 19 In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. 20 On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.”
[Reading above - John 14: 15-21]
John chapters 14-17 are referred to as the Farewell Discourse of Jesus. These are Jesus’ final instructions to his disciples as he anticipates the sense of loss and confusion they will face at his death. Jesus does not want the suffering and death of this life to undermine our confidence and trust in the Light and Life that is Christ. Jesus promises the gift of the Holy Spirit that will preserve the loving and intimate relationship we have with the Creator and the Christ even when we feel like orphans.
Questions for Reflection:
Jesus’ instructions for life with God are distilled to a single commandment: just as I have loved you, you also should love one another (John 13:34-35). How does obedience to this commandment reveal your love for Jesus?
In this brief passage the Holy Spirit is described as one who advocates, reveals truth, abides, and unites us with God. How have you experienced these aspects of the Holy Spirit? In what other ways have you experienced the actions of the Spirit in your life?
What experiences make you feel orphaned and alone? How does this teaching, and your experience of the Spirit bring you comforting companionship? How do you share this comforting companionship with others feeling orphaned?
