Key Notes from the reading & sermon:

“Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’ But I say to you, Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God, or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.

The key to living up to the impossibly high standards of the kingdom of heaven on earth is to invite Emmanuel (God with us) into your life and to allow Emmanuel to lead the way.

Questions for Reflection:

The Ignatian Examen is a spiritual practice that builds our trust in Christ by expanding our awareness of the Divine presence in daily life. Search this practice and try it in this new week.

Paul wrote: It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me (Galatians 2:20). How have you experienced this truth in the presence of Emmanuel, God with us? How have you experienced Christ doing in and through you what is impossible for you on your own?

Jesus concludes this section in the Sermon on the Mount by saying, Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). How do you interpret this teaching of Jesus?
