Key Notes from the reading & sermon:
I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them. That one is like a man building a house, who dug deeply and laid the foundation on rock; when a flood arose, the river burst against that house but could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the river burst against it, immediately it fell, and great was the ruin of that house.”
During Advent we are concluding our study of the synoptic gospels (Mark, Matthew and Luke). The word “synoptic” means these three gospels share a common perspective. We have noticed the way Matthew and Luke rely heavily on the earliest gospel, Mark, to tell their stories. Matthew and Luke also include stories they share in common but do not appear in Mark. This source is referred to by Biblical scholars as “Q”. “Q” is the first letter for the German word for source. “Q” is a source that compiled the sayings of Jesus. Today’s passage in Luke is also found in Matthew 7:24-27. This parable of the Two Foundations in each gospel comes at the conclusion of a sermon by Jesus, emphasizing the value of integrity among Jesus’ disciples. Disciples are the kind of people whose words and actions are aligned. Hope in the Word is the source of this integrity.
Questions for Reflection:
Look at Luke 6:47-49 and Matthew 7:24-27 side by side. Note the subtle differences between the two. How might these differences lead to different interpretations?
What does the flood symbolize? What does the foundation symbolize? How does one build on the “rock”?
What is the connection between this parable and the first Advent candle symbolizing Hope?
