Key Notes from the reading & sermon:

Soon afterwards he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God. The twelve were with him, as well as some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, and Joanna, the wife of Herod’s steward Chuza, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them out of their resources.

In Luke’s time, the era bridging the 1st and 2nd centuries, the good news is reaching farther and wider in the Roman empire. The church is increasingly diverse, including the leadership role of women. This hallmark of early church life is prefigured in the ministry of Jesus and the prominent ministry of people like Mary of Magdala, Joanna and Susanna. Their importance is further emphasized by their presence at and witness to the climactic events of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection.

Questions for Reflection:

  • From the beginning of Luke’s gospel there is an emphasis on the inclusive nature of the graceful reign of God in Jesus. Note Mary’s song in Luke 1:52, the announcement of Jesus’ birth to lowly shepherds in Luke 2:8-14, and the song of Simeon in Luke 2:29-32. How does today’s text connect to and advance this theme?

  • Luke’s second volume, The Acts of the Apostles, highlights the Spirit’s work in the broad embrace of the gospel of Jesus. For instance, note: Acts 8:26-40, the welcome of the Ethiopian eunuch; Acts 10:30-36, the welcome of a Roman centurion; and Acts 16:11-15, the baptism of Lydia and her household. If “Jesus Christ is Lord of all” then how can we withhold the gospel and welcome of the church to all? What are the stories we can tell of the gospel’s inclusive reach?
