Key Notes from the reading & sermon:

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Matthew concludes his gospel with one more connection between Jesus and Moses. As Moses concluded his life and ministry on a mountaintop with final instructions, so too the Risen Jesus is on a mountaintop sending his disciples into the next phase of ministry with final instructions and a promise. As obedience is the appropriate response to the Divine commands Moses mediated, we are not surprised that obedience is the essence of Jesus’ commission. What makes obedience to Jesus’ way of grace and peace possible? Might it be the promise of Jesus’ abiding presence empowering the ministry of disciples to all the world?

Questions for Reflection:

  • In this story doubt does not disqualify discipleship. Those with doubts receive the commission and promise too. What doubts do you bring to discipleship? How do you incorporate those doubts into your trust in Christ? How does Christ incorporate those doubts into ministry?

  • Our experience confirms the truth, power corrupts. How is it that the Risen Christ is not corrupted by having Divine authority? Is the authority of discipleship the power to humbly serve?

  • Who guided you toward discipleship? Does that experience help you identify the way you can “make disciples”? Is it possible that developing the awareness of the abiding presence of Christ produces the transformation in your life that proves winsome for others?
