This We Believe: We Trust the Spirit, Life Giver and Unifier
The United Church of Christ Statement of Faith
You bestow upon us your Holy Spirit, creating and renewing the church of Jesus Christ, binding in covenant faithful people of all ages, tongues, and races.
So then, brothers and sisters, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— for if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.
[Reading above - Romans 8: 12-17]
In a divided and hurting world, out of line with the Creator’s intentions, Paul the Apostle, offers a solution. United by our disobedience to God and our need for Divine help, Paul invites us to be honest about our human condition and humbly turn to the grace of God in Christ to be reconciled, restored, and transformed. We stand on the foundation of grace which gives us the hope of sharing the reconciliation we have been given. By grace we are empowered to partner with Christ to fulfill the promise of Shalom—wholeness, harmony, and comprehensive well-being for all. In today’s passage Paul warns of a stumbling block along the path of reconciliation—failing to live an integrated life of body and spirit.
Questions for Reflection:
Paul teaches that the gift of the Spirit of God in us makes us God’s children. On Pentecost we celebrate the way the Spirit is made widely available. How do you experience the Spirit in your life? What does it mean to you to be a child of God?
Paul describes life apart from God’s spirit as “slavery”. What do you think he meant by that? How would you describe those times when you have felt distanced from God?
Paul pairs suffering and glory. He believes we suffer with Christ so that we also may be glorified with Christ. How has suffering opened your eyes to an experience of Divine glory?
