The First Sunday of Advent, Hope Through Justice and Righteousness
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: “The Lord is our righteousness.”

Advent is a liturgical season leading us to the celebration of Christ’s birth. It is an opportunity to turn to God with a humble heart and seek the transformation of following the way of Christ. Christ offers us hope. The prophet Jeremiah instilled hope in our ancestors during a time of adversity. He used an image of unexpected growth to represent the hope we find in our faith. Like a sapling which rises from a tree that has been cut down, so we trust Christ to bring new life to the places in our lives and world that seem lifeless. Hope is ever alive!
Questions for Reflection:
Jeremiah was forced to leave his home as the result of the destruction of his homeland. What destructive forces in your life and in our world leave you feeling insecure and uncertain? How does the abiding presence of God’s Spirit give you an enduring feeling of being at home wherever you are?
Jesus was born into the world of an authoritarian empire that oppressed the masses for the benefit of a few. Jesus gave the people hope by turning the imperial values upside down. Jesus valued humility, service, compassion, justice and righteousness as the foundation for an alternative governance—the reign of God, not Caesar. What actions can you take to show that you are a citizen of God’s kingdom on earth?
A practical way to share Christ’s gift of hope is through encouragement. Think about your circle of influence. Who needs your encouragement in this new week?
A Practice to Focus on Discipleship
We are using an ancient spiritual practice called Lectio Divina. This is a prayerful way of reading a scripture passage with mindfulness of Christ’s Living Spirit in the words. We are currently using Romans 12:9-18 as our scripture focus. On Sundays please slowly read through these verses a few times in an attitude of prayer. Pay attention to a word or phrase that stands out. Then apply this word or phrase to the challenges and opportunities of each day in the week.
